James Radda, Black & Veatch Director of Production-China, briefed Chancellor Hemenway, Bill Tsutsui, Allen Rawitch, and other members of the KU delegation on tips for integrating U.S. and Chinese business culture on a guided tour of Black & Veatch facilities in Beijing.

The Chancellor’s delegation visited the Chinese Scholarship Council for a discussion with Deputy Secretary-General YANG Xinyu on the Council’s programs for funding top graduate students from China to study overseas at research universities like KU.

Chancellor Hemenway met with Peking University Executive Vice President and Provost LIN Jianhua to discuss potential areas of cooperation.

The Chancellor’s delegation spent a full day at Huazhong Normal University, partner institute to KU’s Confucius Institute, with discussions on potential areas for expanded cooperation, a lecture by the Chancellor on the Harlem Renaissance, and an evening performance of music, dance, and theatre by students and faculty from Huazhong Normal.

Huazhong Normal University President MA Min hosted an evening of performing arts for the KU delegation, including a staging of martial arts choreographed in conjunction with a simultaneous demonstration of Chinese calligraphy and painting. President Ma then presented the paintings and calligraphy to the Chancellor on stage.

Huazhong Normal University faculty and students presented an extravaganza evening of performing arts for the KU delegation, with vocal music, dance, Chinese opera, martial arts, calligraphy, painting and even a Chinese language comedy routine by KU student Trent Wilson and a classmate.

Chancellor Hemenway visited the Shanghai offices of Overland Park company YRC Logistics, where President and CEO Jim Ritchie explained the importance of learning Chinese language and culture to develop successful relationships with Chinese business partners.

Stephen Mazza, Associate Dean of the KU Law School, and other members of the delegation accompanied the Chancellor in a visit to the Shanghai offices of Overland Park company YRC Logistics, where Roland Chong, Managing Director-Asia, and Jim Ritchie, President and CEO, briefed the delegation on YRC’s approach to building a successful logistics business in China.
